(Moorhead, MN) -- Moorhead Area Public Schools had 7,336 students in grades K-12 enrolled for the first day of school Monday, which continues the recent trend of high enrollment. Students returned to full time in person learning in the classroom for fall instruction. Enrollment numbers are inclusive of the 267 students enrolled in Moorhead online academy.
The 2021-22 school year’s opening enrollment is 183 students more than last year’s. The number of students in the district will fluctuate over the next few weeks before stabilizing in October and November, according to historical trends.
The current 2021-22 enrollment figures continue the trend of increasing enrollment in the district. Opening enrollment for the 2020-21 school year was 7,153; 2019-20 school year was 7,087; 2018-19 was 6,987 and 2017-18 was 6,701.
“We are pleased to welcome all of our students back in person this fall as we have learned through the pandemic that students learn best in the classroom,” said Dr. Brandon Lunak, Superintendent. “We are especially excited to open our Moorhead High School Career Academy today, offering unique experiential learning for our students.”
The opening of the Moorhead High School Career Academy is the first stage in a five year high school transformation project that includes innovating the educational experience. The new, flexible learning environment will encompass one school on two campuses with a common 9-12 experience. Construction of a new Moorhead High School began in May and will continue in stages through the 2024-25 school year. The educational transformation is a collaborative process with community and business partners.
