Car floats down the Red River

Some tense moments Thursday night when a car rolled into the Red River in Moorhead.

According to Moorhead Fire Department Acting Captain Bert McDonough, firefighters responded to a call of a car in the river by the North Dam at approximately 5:49 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses on the scene told authorities that the car went in the water accidentally -- and was unoccupied.

During the investigation it was determined that the driver of the vehicle had been distracted by a pet shortly after arriving and exited the vehicle without putting it into park. Authorities on scene were able to see the vehicle floating for several minutes, approximately one-quarter mile downstream from the staging location, before it submerged into the water.

Early Thursday night, McDonough said the crews on scene were using sonar to 'try and location, plus mark, it.' The Moorhead Fire Department along with the Fargo Fire Department searched the river but were unable to locate the car.
