Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office reports scam

On October 1, 2019, The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office was notified that residents in the area have been receiving scam phone calls from an individual claiming to be a Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Deputy from the arrest warrants division.

During the calls, the caller claims there is an active arrest warrant for the individual and informs them that they can, “clear the warrant” by paying a bond amount over the phone. The caller demands various forms of payment including but not limited to, credit/debit cards, prepaid cash cards, gift cards, or by using various types of money transfer services.

The Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office will never solicit bonds for active warrants via any of the payment methods listed above, nor will they ever take a bond payment over the phone.

If you should receive a phone call like this, please hang up the phone and contact the Sheriff’s Office at 701-780-8280 to verify the legitimacy of the call, or contact your local law enforcement agency.
