October 6-12 is Fire Prevention Week

The Fargo Fire Department encourages citizens to participate in Fire Prevention Week from October 6-12.  This is part of a nationwide effort, which is united under the campaign “Not every hero wears a cape.  Plan and Practice your Escape” More information on the broader campaign can be found at www.firepreventionweek.org.

In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. This year’s campaign works to educate the public about small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

The “Plan and Practice your Escape” campaign highlights steps people can take to help quickly and safely escape a fire:

•             Map out the layout of your home and mark two exits from every room (typically a door and a window).

•             Mark the location of all smoke alarms (There should be one on each level and in each bedroom).

•             Pick a meeting place outside of your home.

•            Make sure everyone knows how to call 911.  Teach children how to make emergency calls from a locked cell phones.

While NFPA and the Fargo Fire Department are focusing on home fires, these fire safety messages apply to virtually anywhere.

All seven Fargo Fire Department stations are available for tours and visits from 6 pm to 8 pm during Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12).  A list of the stations and their physical addresses is found below.  Crews are on duty and may be out of the station responding to incidents.
