Burgum announces re-election campaign

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has announced that he will seek re-election for the office of Governor for the State of North Dakota.

In an exclusive one-on-one interview with WZFG Radio's Scott Hennen, Burgum says the decision is one that was not made lightly.

"With the support of family and friends," he said. "We are ready to throw our hat in the ring for four more years."

Burgum and his Lieutenant Governor, Brent Sanford, both came into the public sector from the private sector. 

One of the highlights in the first four years, he says, is the work that First Lady Kathryn Burgum is doing. Recovery Reinvented is a program that started when the Burgums first arrived in office. The program addresses addiction in North Dakota. 

Governor Burgum also highlighted his work with the North Dakota Legislature, saying that he and Sanford have 'a good relationship with a lot of the legislators.' 

In the 2016 election, Burgum won by a wide margin over the Democratic nominee Marvin Nelson, winning by more than 190,000 votes.

In the upcoming 2020 election, Burgum is rumored to have at least one Republican challenger, and insiders say Rick Becker is likely to run in the primary.
