SHS Student Receives John Wall Promising Artist Scholarship

The North Dakota Council of Teachers of English (NDCTE) recently named Sheyenne High School’s Piper Sommer the recipient of the 2019 John Wall Promising Artist Scholarship.

Miss Sommer was selected by the NDCTE board based on her nomination materials, whichincluded a letter of support from Mr. Nathan Kurtti, Sheyenne High School Language Arts Teacher and NDCTE member. Mr. Kurtti spoke highly of Miss Sommer, saying “her artistic, academic, and creative abilities demonstrate someone who is ever-so deserving of the NDCTE John Wall Promising Artist Scholarship. I see a promising, bright future for Piper as not only a humble and courageous individual, but also as an artist who is bound to change the world in positive ways for the arts.”

In order to receive the scholarship, a nominee must be a junior or senior at a North Dakota high school or an upcoming freshman at a North Dakota college or university. The student must show great promise as a creative artist and/or be pursuing a career in the creative or literary arts.

According to the organization’s own news release, the North Dakota Council of Teachers of English is a professional organization for individuals who are genuinely concerned with the development of the English language. The group strives to support the state standards and benchmarks and improve the quality of English instruction at all levels.
