Two arrested following vehicle pursuit in Clay County

On Saturday, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a Barnesville, Minn., officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on vehicle for having a registration violation. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit traveled northbound on HWY 9 from Barnesville to Clay County Road 12. The driver went westbound on County Road 12 to County Road 17 with speeds ranging from 70 to 100 mph.

The driver then traveled southbound on County Road 17 over the I94, where stop sticks were successfully deployed by the Sheriff’s Office. A deputy with the Sheriff’s Office became the primary pursuit unit while the vehicle continued southbound on County Road 17.

The vehicle lost a front tire and continued southbound until reaching Clay County Road 2. The deputy was able to successfully conduct a PIT maneuver, causing the vehicle to enter into the ditch at the intersection of County Road 2 and County Road 15. The vehicle became stuck in the ditch and the driver then fled on foot.

The driver of the vehicle was apprehended by the Sheriff’s Office after a short foot chase through a field. The passenger stayed in the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. The occupants of the vehicle are being held in the Clay County Correctional Center. The car that they were in came back as being a stolen vehicle out of Fargo.
