Grand Forks Police see reports of US Mail theft

Since December 24, 2019, the Grand Forks Police Department has received several reports of US Mail being stolen from residential mailboxes in the city.  The majority of the reports are concentrated in an area south of 24th Avenue and east of South 20th Street.  Two (2) suspect vehicle descriptions have been provided related to this activity.  One is described as a dark colored sport utility vehicle and the second is described as a white four (4) door sedan.  No license plates for the suspect vehicles are available.  The activity is reported to be taking place in the late night and early morning hours.  The Grand Forks Police Department would request any resident who knows they are missing mail to contact us at 701-787-8000 and report the theft.

The Police Department would also recommend residents not leave outgoing mail for pickup in their mailboxes overnight.  If a resident is going to be out of town for an extended period of time it is recommended they contact the Post Office and ask that their mail be held until they return to town or that a trusted neighbor be asked to empty the mailbox after delivery.  Also, residents are encouraged to sign up for the Postal Services Informed Delivery service.  Informed Delivery allows residents to receive an email which contains a scanned photograph of all pieces of mail scheduled to be delivered to your address on that day.  The mail hold service and the Informed Delivery service can be obtained by signing up at the Postal Service website, www.usps.com.
