Leak detected at South Elementary; Classes remain in session

The following is a statement from West Fargo Public Schools:

This morning, our maintenance team identified a small leak in the fuel line for the boiler system at South Elementary that was creating an odor in the building. The leak was repaired and cleaned up; since the odor was not strong and there were no other concerns, school continued as normal. As the day progressed, the odor has continued to linger and is most noticeable in classrooms in the K-2 wing that are adjacent to the boiler room. We are operating the air handling system at 100% capacity to help move the odor out of the building.

The district’s maintenance team and the administrative team at South Elementary have checked in with all affected classrooms; some will be continuing their learning in a different space. While there are no additional concerns to safety due to this odor, it is always within the purview of the parents to pick up their child at any point.

Dismissal will occur as usual this afternoon. We have communicated with South families, and have let them know we will communicate again if there will be any changes to the schedule for tomorrow.
