Burgum visits Sandbag Central in Fargo

Governor Doug Burgum was in Fargo on Wednesday to visit Sandbag Central.

“The primary thing we wanted to do today is share our gratitude,” Burgum said.

In his address, the governor highlighted the advances in permanent flood protection—which has taken some great strides in the last couple of years.

Among the volunteers in attendance Wednesday afternoon was a group from Minot, Burgum said. Among them, a group from Minot’s Air Force Base, along with Minot mayor Shaun Sipma.

“People here look out for each other in times of need,” he said.

Sipma said, “After weeks of discussion with Fargo, it became clear that the solidarity needs to show throughout North Dakota. What a better way than to load up a bus from Minot, bringing not only business folks from Minot, but some of the great people from Minot Air Force Base.”

Also in attendance was Deputy Mayor Dave Piepkorn, who told those in attendance that the city is one-eighth the way to their goal. He shared the city’s vision for sandbags, should they not need them.

“We are working with the County to give them some,” he said. In addition, Piepkorn said they would also look to give Jamestown sandbags, if needed.

A young girl, who was not named, wrote on a sandbag, which was presented to Burgum. The sandbag held the words, “Happy 2020 Flood Fight, Governor Burgum. We are going to win again.”
