Fargo School Board talks boundary changes

The Fargo Public Schools Board of Education has made some changes to the boundaries of its schools. Starting in the fall of 2021, the boundaries will see a slight change.

Board members, after much discussion, will move the neighborhoods of Hawthorne-Clara Barton, located east of University Drive, to the Ben Franklin Middle School and Fargo North High School attendance area for the 2021-2022 school term. The motion carried 6-3 Tuesday night.

The bigger discussion surrounded a motion to develop recommendations to provide more space at both Fargo Davies High School and Discovery Middle School, which are anticipated to see an increase in the next several years, providing for the possibility and expectation that those two buildings will become overcrowded due to the increase in school population.

The board, after some contentious discussion, narrowly approved a plan to develop possible recommendations of boundary adjustments from Discovery Middle School and Davies High School, moving them to the Carl Ben Eielson Middle School and Fargo South High School’s attendance area.

In approving the motion, the board now asks Fargo Public Schools to come up with a plan to address the situation by this summer, when the board will take up discussion around the situation during their summer board retreat.
