An unborn baby is dead, its mother recovering, after an accidental shooting in rural Steele County on Sunday night.
According to Steele County Sheriff Wayne Beckman, the incident happened at approximately 8:42 p.m. at a rural Portland address. Officials say first responders from West Traill Ambulance, along with Portland Fire, were called for a gun shot wound to a 22-year-old female, who was pregnant.
The female was transported by Life Flight to a Fargo hospital, where the baby died from injuries sustained in the incident.
The 22-year-old female is recovering from her injuries.
The shooting, according to authorities, was an accidental discharge of a firearm.
The incident is under investigation by the Steele County Sheriff’s Office and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
