Insensitive social media post results in suspension, further disciplinary action for correctional deputy

Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner says an investigation has revealed a deputy violated county and departmental policies related to a social media post on the popular video-sharing social media network site, Tik Tok.

According to information from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Tamara “Tori” Holland told Cass County Sheriff Captain Andy Frobig that she had made a short video on “Tik Tok," a video-sharing social media network site, referencing a Native American caricature which was now receiving a lot of negative attention. Deputy Holland mentioned that the voice used in the caricature was not hers, rather it was a voice she was able to pull from the “Tik Tok” application. Deputy Holland told Captain Frobig that she has since taken the video down but that before taking it down it had received numerous shares.

Holland made the video while off duty and had used her personal account, Jahner’s report said. Deputy Holland stated that those who were upset with the video had learned through her Facebook profile that she was a deputy with the Cass County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Holland stated that the association to the video and her association with the Cass County Sheriff's Office was bringing a lot of attention to the post and the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

Holland was originally placed on administrative leave.

After investigating, Holland was issued a 24-hour unpaid suspension, to be served at the office’s discretion. In addition, she will not be able to apply for a promotion within one calendar year and will need to attend further trainings.
