North Dakota Celebrates Direct Support Professionals Week

Governor Doug Burgum proclaimed Sept. 9 through 15 as Direct Support Professionals Week in the State of North Dakota.

According to a proclamation from the Governor’s Office, more than 5,000 North Dakotans are employed through agencies as direct support professionals in both home- and community-based settings.

Jake Reuter, North Dakota Department of Human Services Money Follows The Person program administrator, tells WZFG News that these individuals “are the foundation of services the agency provides.”

Reuter says the providers supporter individuals young to old in multiple facets of daily living—from in-home supports to in-community supports.

The program also aims to help older individuals to be able to stay in their home longer—and the direct support professionals play a vital part in that, Reuter says.

He says direct support is the fastest growing employment sector in the nation.
