Retirees Are Returning to Work

A survey done by Home Instead, Inc., says more than 50 percent of workers approaching retirement within the next couple of years are returning to work.

Sheena Sando, general manager of Home Instead Senior Care in Fargo, says her office is seeing that seniors are not able to retire, due to the fact that they want to be able to make money. Also, seniors are missing the purpose and routine in their life, Sando says.

“Our seniors are ending up in completely different fields than their first job,” she says.

A majority of Home Instead’s caregivers are “unretired.”

Sando says more than 80 percent of those surveyed said they want to make an impact in their communities.

According to the Home Instead, Inc. survey, important motivators for returning to work for those who have retired were fighting boredom or keeping their minds sharp, while finding new challenges and fulfillment were the most common motivators for those pending retirement.

“A majority wanted to get out to their community and give back,” Sando says.

Home Instead’s Fargo office serves the F-M metro, along with Lakes Country.
