Senator Hoeven Encourages North Dakota High School Students to Apply for Educational Program That Brings Students to Washington, D.C. to Learn About Government
Senator John Hoeven today announced that the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) is accepting applications for participation in the program’s 57th annual Washington Week taking place March 2-9, 2019. The program brings students throughout the country to Washington, D.C. to participate in an intensive week-long study of the United States government. Each student in the program also receives a $10,000 scholarship from the Hearst Foundations.
“The U.S. Senate Youth Program is a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience held annually in our nation’s capital,” Hoeven said. “The program takes students to historic sites and arranges meetings between them and top federal government officials to get a truly unique perspective on our government and expand their knowledge of how it works. I encourage all interested North Dakota high school students to apply for this historic and prestigious program.”
High school juniors and seniors are eligible for the program. To apply, students should contact their high school principal or North Dakota’s selection administrator, Patricia A. Laubach, at plaubach

After receiving applications, the USSYP chooses two delegates from each state. The program’s strongest candidates are students with outstanding leadership abilities, a firm commitment to public service and high academic standing.
Since its founding in 1962, more than 5,500 students have participated in the USSYP, with several going on to become government officials, including members of Congress, military leaders and foreign ambassadors. This year,Brandon Prichard from St. Mary’s Central High School and Erica Solberg from Century High School served as North Dakota’s delegates during the 56th USSYP.
