Elementary Students to Help Those Less Fortunate

Students at Longfellow Elementary School are making a special donation to a food pantry, and have a chance to see how it helps the homeless in the community.

On Tuesday, November 20, the fifth graders from Longfellow Elementary School are making an outing to deliver warm winter gear to the Dorothy Day Food Pantry, and end the day with a tour of the Dorothy Day House. This is part of a service learning project to learn more about those in need.

For the past three weeks, the 53 fifth graders from Longfellow Elementary School collected more than 100 gently used or new blankets and sleeping bags, as well as collected fleece to make cut tie blankets. Once the donations are made, students and their teachers will head to Dorothy Day House where building advocates will provide a tour of the facility. Students will learn about the various services available, the century-long history, and the woman who the house is named after: Dorothy Day.
