SHS Student Nationally Selected to Represent North Dakota

Preeti Chemiti, a student at Sheyenne High School, has been selected as one of only two students to represent North Dakota as a delegate to  the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Along with the opportunity to attend the  program’s Washington Week in Washington, D.C. in March, Preeti has also been awarded a  $10,000 college scholarship to be used for her undergraduate studies.

During Washington Week, delegates will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials of the Departments of State and Defense, and leaders of other federal agencies. They will also have the opportunity to attend a meeting with a U.S. Supreme Court justice and the President of the United States.

The United States Senate Youth Program was founded in 1962 and each year two of the highest-achieving students in each state are selected as state representatives. Applicants must be a junior or senior in a public or private high school; actively serving in a government, civic, or educational student organization; and a permanent resident of the United States. Applicants are then selected through a highly competitive merit-based selection process, located at the state departments of education nationwide. USSYP alumni include current leaders and innovators in the government, journalism, law, medicine, business, and military industries.
