Hoeven Outlines SCIA Initiatives at National American Indian Housing Council's 2019 Legislative Conference

At the National American Indian Housing Council’s 2019 Legislative Conference today, Senator John Hoeven, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, outlined the Committee’s focus on housing initiatives for the 116th Congress.

“As Chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, I have worked in a bipartisan manner to find real, practical, and long-term solutions to the issues that Tribes face,” said Hoeven. “I understand the unique challenges that exist when it comes to finding safe, quality, and affordable housing in the United States’ rural communities. Indian Country is not exempt from these challenges.” 

During his remarks, Hoeven highlighted housing priorities, including:

• The Tribal HUD-VASH Act of 2019, legislation introduced on February 6, 2019 by Senators Hoeven, Tom Udall, Johnny Isakson, and Jon Tester, which authorizes a joint tribal housing initiative between the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program to provide rental and housing assistance to homeless and at-risk veterans.
• Securing $200 million in competitive Indian housing funds over fiscal years 2018 and 2019. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation Housing and Urban Development, Senator Hoeven continues working to secure the necessary resources to provide safe, quality, and affordable housing in the United States’ rural communities.
