Baesler Applauds ND Adoption of ‘Seal of Biliteracy’

North Dakota students who can speak at least two languages are eligible for a new seal on their high school diploma.

It is called the “Seal of Bi-Literacy.” North Dakota recently qualified to offer the seal on the diplomas of this year’s graduating high school seniors.

State School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says school districts can apply for seals of bi-literacy on behalf of students who want to have the seal.

There are separate silver and gold bi-literacy seals. The gold seal demonstrates stronger language skills. The Seal of Bi-Literacy is also listed on a student’s high school transcript.

North Dakota students who are native English speakers and have learned a second language may qualify for the award. Students who learn English as a second language also qualify. Speakers of Native American tribal languages can qualify.

Baesler says students who know multiple languages are better equipped to thrive in today’s global economy.
