Grand Forks Businesses Fail Tobacco Compliance Checks

Four Grand Forks businesses have failed recent tobacco compliance checks, according to a news release from the Grand Forks Police Department.

The department conducted the checks on February 21 and April 22 using area youth buyers. The checks were done in compliance with grant funding obtained through Grand Forks Public Health and the North Dakota Department of Health.

Through the checks, the department uses youth under the age of 18. The youth enter establishments that sell tobacco products under the supervision of a police officer in accordance with city ordinance 9-0217.  The youth attempt to purchase tobacco products while in no way concealing their actual age and promptly displaying ID when asked for it.

Twenty-nine businesses were checked. The four that failed the checks were: Valley Dairy, 1401 South Washington Street; Orton’s South Town Citgo, 2002 South Washington Street; Walmart, 2551 32nd Avenue South; and Hugo’s, 1925 13th Avenue North.

The clerks who sold the products received citations, and the businesses will also face an administrative sanction, the department says.
