Grafton Man Charged in Alleged Shaken Baby Syndrome Case

A Grafton man is facing two Class B Felony charges, following an investigation into an incident on May 11.

According to court documents, Bruce Umphrey, a 24-year-old Grafton resident, faces a Class B Felony charge of Aggravated Assault and a Class B Felony charge of Child Abuse and Neglect.

The charges stem from an incident involving a three month old baby.

Court documents say that, on May 11, the Grafton Police Department received a report that the child was flown to Sanford Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an unknown suspicious manner. The injuries included a bulging soft spot, brain bleed, hematoma or hygroma in the spine from C6 down, without cord compression, stroke, fracture of the tenth rib, hemorrhages to both eyes, bruising around the chin and lower cheek, and a scrape around the nose.

Authorities interviewed the child’s father, Umphrey, and mother. Umphrey admitted to shaking the baby on two occasions at his Grafton home. He said the baby had a change in behavior, which progressively worsened, causing her to be transported to a medical facility.

Umphrey told authorities that the instances where he shook the child were “a direct result of his frustration” with the child vomiting, crying and being inconsolable. He admitted to knowing the actions were “wrong” and that he concealed his actions from everyone.

Umphrey appeared in Walsh County District Court last Friday, and was issued a $20,000 bond, cash or surety, with conditions.

His initial appearance is June 17.
