Domestic Call Turns Leads to Fleeing Suspect

A 9-1-1 call for a domestic disturbance in the City of Hawley turned into a search for the suspect.

According to Hawley Police Chief Joe Backlund, the Hawley Police Department was dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of Westgate Circle for a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, a 33-year-old female, the victim, reported she had been assaulted by her boyfriend, a 32-year-old Moorhead man. The victim advised authorities that the suspect smashed the windows out of her vehicle. By the time authorities arrived on scene, the suspect had fled on foot from the residence.

A perimeter was established in the area, with assistance from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol and the Glyndon Police Department. In addition, a K-9 unit from the Fargo Police Department responded.

At 1:10 p.m., the subject was observed in the Dollar General Store by an off-duty Clay County deputy. Officers responded and the suspect was taken into custody without incident, and transported to the Clay County Jail.

Reports are being submitted to the Clay County Attorney’s Office for formal charges.
