Weapon Recovered After Grand Forks Standoff

A Grand Forks man is dead and a weapon has been recovered, according to the Grand Forks Police Department. A news release from the department says, in part, that, upon conclusion of this incident, the Grand Forks Police Department could not confirm whether a firearm, which had been reported to be in Samuel Nelson’s possession by witnesses, had been located.  They can now confirm a firearm has been located and secured. Nelson was arrested after a multiple hour standoff, assessed by Altru paramedics on scene, and transported to Grand Forks County Corrections, where he was later found unresponsive and subsequently died. During the course of this incident, a suspicious backpack was seized by GFPD officers.  That backpack was searched Tuesday, and a loaded handgun was located, along with Mr. Nelson’s wallet and identification.  The handgun was safely secured.  The physical attributes of the handgun matched witness descriptions of the firearm observed in Mr. Nelson’s possession.
