UND PD Officer Comes to the Rescue

A University of North Dakota Police officer is being heralded for his courageous actions in an emergency situation on Tuesday. According to reports, UND Sergeant Christian Ortega responded to a 9-1-1 call Tuesday in regards to a choking baby. Reports say Ortega arrived at 1:57 p.m.Tuesday afternoon, just one minute after the emergency dispatch went out, and delivered back blows to the ten-month-old girl, dislodging a piece of plastic from the infant’s mouth. All of this before firefighters and Altru Ambulance had arrived. Lieutenant Danny Weigel, who serves as the UND Police Department’s Public Information Officer, says the department is proud of Sergeant Ortega’s actions, and are very thankful that he was in the area when the call went out. Weigel describes Ortega as an experienced officer who is very calm and collected in stressful situations.
