FARGO, N.D. – The Cass County Commission has approved more than $1.6 million to support the Maple River Water Resource District’s flood protection project in Davenport.
An earthen ring levee designed to protect the community from a 100 year flood will be built around the town. This will eliminate the federal requirement for flood insurance for many property owners. The Commission estimates this will save people $358,000 every year in premiums.
“Protecting our communities from flooding is one of the county’s most important responsibilities,” Cass County Commissioner Duane Breitling said. “This investment reflects the Commission’s dedication to supporting projects that provide long-term benefits for residents, strengthen local economies and improve quality of life for future generations.”
The total cost of the project is estimated to be more than $7.3 million paid for by the Cass County flood sales tax, the state Water Commission and a local assessment.
