Fire Destroys South Fargo Deck

(Fargo, ND) -- A cautionary tale of fire safety and warming weather in South Fargo Tuesday afternoon.

At about 2:30 p.m, Fargo firefighters responded to a report of a deck on fire at 5303 University Drive South they say started because of improper disposal of smoking materials.

The first fire crew on scene reported smoke and flames coming from the underneath a deck attached to the house, with a resident of the home trying to put out the fire with a garden hose.

The fire did not extend into the house but there was light smoke throughout that was removed by the fire department. The deck was a total loss, with over $4,500 in total damages.

Fargo Fire officials again reminding everyone that as the weather warms and outside activities increase, be very careful while enjoying time on your deck. They say grills should be kept a safe distance from the walls and carefully watched, while discarded smoking materials should be properly disposed of in a metal container and cleaned out regularly.

No injuries were reported.
