Moorhead Public Service Implements Mandatory Watering Restrictions

(Moorhead, MN) -- Effective immediately, Moorhead Public Service is implementing Stage 1 mandatory water use restrictions for residents of both Moorhead and Dilworth. Due to Minnesota’s continued and widespread drought conditions, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has implemented the next provision in the Minnesota Statewide Drought Plan, indicating Minnesota is now in a drought warning phase.

A drought warning phase means each Minnesota public water supplier must implement water use restrictions in accordance with their Water Supply Plan. MPS is implementing Stage 1 mandatory watering restrictions in compliance with this designation.

MPS’ Water Supply Plan includes actions such as even-odd number outdoor watering restrictions. Lawn watering and car washing will be limited to all residents based on their street address. All residents with an address ending in an even number may use water for lawn watering and car washing on days ending with an even number only. All residents with an address ending in an odd number may use water for lawn watering and car washing on days ending with an odd number only.

In addition to the even-odd number restrictions, MPS strongly encourages that all non-essential water use for lawns, including watering of city park space and athletic spaces should only occur during overnight hours (8:00 pm to 8:00 am). Watering during daylight hours, especially during high temperatures, causes most of the water to evaporate. Significant water use reduction is achievable by restricting non-essential outdoor water use, especially lawn irrigation, power washing buildings, washing cars, and filling swimming pools.

The following uses are exempt from the watering restrictions:

  • Gardens
  • Flowers
  • Newly-planted trees and shrubs
  • Newly-sodded or seeded lawns

Any person found violating the watering restrictions may be subject to fines in accordance with the enforcement schedule pictured below.

At this time, Moorhead and Dilworth have an ample supply of water to meet current demands. MPS’ Water Division staff is implementing these restrictions to ensure efficient use of our water resources.

MPS says it will continue to provide updated information as needed.
