Two arrested after chase, crash in both Clay and Cass Counties

(Fargo, ND) -- Two people, who tried to pull a switcheroo on law enforcement were both arrested for driving the same vehicle that was involved in a high speed chase and eventual crash.

The chase began in Clay County late Wednesday afternoon. The Sheriff's Office says a deputy clocked a vehicle going 97mph in a 55mph zone. The vehicle stopped and the driver and passenger switched spots and took off, with speeds hitting 100mph. Another deputy deployed stop sticks and that slowed the vehicle. Deputies stopped pursuing the vehicle which pulled over a short time later.The passenger, who was the original driver got out but the vehicle kept going. Clay County Deputies arrested 43-year old Jerry Belgarde of Mahnomen for DUI, Driving Under Suspension, Speeding and No Insurance.  

The vehicle that fled Clay County Deputies crashed in Cass County near 19th Ave. N and County Rd. 17. Deputies arrested 32-year old Michele Perona of Moorhead who was found hiding in a tree grove. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. She is facing charges of DUI, Driving Under Revocation, Reckless Endangerment and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
