'It's a major concern': Local official sounds off on homelessness in Fargo-Moorhead

(Fargo, ND) -- As the winter months draw nearer, a rising issue in the F-M metro is rearing it's head again.

"It's been hard to narrow it down to a solid number, but we're seeing around 1100 people dealing with homelessness here in Fargo," said Churches United Pastor Sue Koesterman, who talked with WDAY Radio's Bonnie and Friends. "The troubling part is we only have on average about 500 beds for people to sleep. The numbers simply don't add up."

The good news is that there has been some changes when it comes to shelters in the area, being that you do not get kicked out for having a previous or in some instances current drug or alcohol issue. At least, not at first.

"It's a behavioral program now," said Pastor Koesterman. "If it effects how you act in the shelters, then that's the other issue." She adds that guns and drugs however are still not permitted in the shelters across the metro however.

Sue also metioned that especially with the colder temps on the horizon, it would be smart for you if you have a family member or friend that may be going through a hard time or is struggling in keeping a roof over their head to give them a call, reach out and try to help.
