(Fargo, ND) -- A phone scam is circulating nationally, with a commong connection to Fargo.

Beginning Thursday morning, telephone users across the United States, mainly in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Texas, have reported receiving phone calls which appear to come from a phone number which matches the main line of Fargo City Hall.

These calls have reportedly consisted of a common “grandparent scam” in which the caller pretends to be a grandchild in need of money. Call recipients are being urged to exercise caution and avoid sharing any personal details if they receive a suspicious phone call.

The City of Fargo is aware of the main line number being misrepresented, and asks anyone who receives a scam call from (701) 241-1310 to refrain from calling back. The main line will remain in service for all regular business needs.

The City’s Information Services Department is working with its telephone service provider to explore all possible remedies to the issue. The Fargo Police Department and authorities from other states have also been notified of the situation.
