Lakes Liquor generates strong 2020 revenues for the City of Detroit Lakes

(Detroit Lakes, MN) -- The city-owned Lakes Liquor in Detroit Lakes is generating solid revenues for the city.

"We really got to tip our hat to Randy Buhr who is the manager and the staff.  You know they kept the place open and running throughout the pandemic in 2020.  A lot of times we were short staffed.  Of course we had additional customer traffic," said City Administrator Kelsey Klemm.

Klemm is celebrating the news that Lakes Liquor finished the year at number 6 overall in the state for gross sales with a total of $8.9 million, according to the State Auditor's report.  That allowed the City of Detroit Lakes to transfer $586,000 in store profits to the general fund.

Those revenues help the city keep property taxes down.

The total sales at the Detroit Lakes store for 2020 rival sales at some municipal liquor stores in much larger Twin Cities area communities.
