(Fargo, ND) -- The Fargo Fire Department has given an update on the blaze that ripped apart a home in South Fargo early Wednesday morning.

Authorities say they responded to a report of smoke coming from an unknown residence on 2nd Ave. S. at 5:09 am. When crews arrived at 1418 2nd Ave. S, a second alarm was called to bring in additional resources to assist in fire response. One person was removed from the residence during fire extinguishment. That person was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and passed away.

Content within the house made entry and extinguishment difficult for responding crews. During extinguishment two firefighters fell into a hole in the floor of the house, but were able to safely remove themselves. Crews on scene continued extinguishing fire for several hours. The search of the structure was slowed down due to a partial collapse of the building.  A search of the house found a second deceased person.

The Fire Department responded with five engines, one truck and two battalion chiefs. FFD was assisted by the Fargo Police Department and Sanford ambulance. A cause for the blaze, as well as identification of the victims, are not yet available.
