(Fargo, ND) -- People wanting to become truck drivers are now facing new training requirements to enter a field which is already short an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 drivers.
"If you think the supply chain is bad now, it's only going to get worse, and then add in the vaccine mandates between Canada and the United States, we are looking at a critical time," said Kelly Krapu, Compliance Manager for Fargo-based True North Compliance Services.
The new federal rule to obtain a commercial driver's license is "Entry Level Driving Training". It requires drivers to complete their training through a specialized school, where enrollment fees can run several thousand dollars. Krapu says the new requirement, which went into effect Monday, should be put on hold until existing supply chain issues are resolved.
Krapu described the situation as "doomsday for the transportation trucking industry".
