(West Fargo, ND) -- West Fargo Firefighters are reminding residents to clear out and check their gas meters and vents to prevent major safety hazards.

West Fargo Fire Marshal Dell Sprecher says the cleanup is necessary, because obstructed meters and vents could lead to service interruptions, gas leaks, and CO2 buildup.

“We recommend keeping a three-foot area clear around all vent and intake tubes,” said West Fargo Fire Marshal Dell Sprecher. “After any snowfall, it is important to inspect all meters and vents to ensure they are clear of both snow and ice.”

When it comes to clearing debris, Sprecher says things like brooms, soft brushed tools and hands work well. He says to avoid items like hammers and shovels to break up hardened snow or compacted ice. The West Fargo Fire Department says if you smell a gas odor or if a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, immediately evacuate and call 911.
