(Fargo, ND) -- Cass County Commissioner Mary Scherling, who serves District 5, is encouraging citizens to pay closer attention to the work of county commissioners and the decisions they make.

I would encourage people, especially folks in the metro area to get engaged," said Scherling.

The former Realtor is serving in her 3rd and final term, after first being elected to the board in 2012.

Scherling recently spoke with WDAY News First about her work on the board, and spoke about some of the issues the commission is focused on.  She also spoke about how fewer people are interested in serving at the county level compared to when she first ran for the office.

"When I first ran for office, there was a number of people running, I want to say seven, eight or nine people that ran in the primary in June.

Scherling says the current board of commissioners maintains a long term focus, which prevents them from being surprised by problems or challenges when they arise in Cass County.
