(West Fargo, ND) -- The West Fargo Fire Department is urging caution with outlet usage after a close call Sunday evening.

Crews were called to The Haven apartments  off 12th Street East around 10:30 p.m. for reports of smoke coming from an apartment, to find an outlet singed from overuse.

"It could've been much worse," said Battalion Chief Joey Porter. "Luckily it just fried the outlet, but no major damage occurred. It's a reminder to not overuse singular outlets for any reason."

That includes fans and mobile A/C units, ahead of more heat expected later this coming week.

Battalion Chief Porter says surge protectors can help, but in this case the person who's outlet smoked out pushed the limit. He says being cautious and spacing out your plug in electronics and other utilities is crucial to avoid bigger risk not only during the summer months, but year round.
