New effort aimed at reducing the number of roadside fatalities

(Fargo, ND) -- The Auto Club Group is launching a new effort aimed at keeping motorists stopped along the side of the road safe. It's called "move over for me".

"So we just want to extend the courtesy of moving over a lane when it's available to all vehicles not matter if it's an emergency vehicle, your vehicle, my vehicle, or whatever it is alongside of the road," said Gene LaDoucer, Regional Director of Public Affairs for AAA - the Auto Club Group.

LaDoucer says North Dakota state law requires drivers to move over a lane when approaching emergency vehicles stopped along the side of the road. But, the law does not apply to stopped private vehicles on the shoulder. LaDoucer is asking drivers to simply move over no matter what vehicle is stopped along the shoulder. He says roughly 350 people are struck and killed while standing near disabled vehicles each year in the United States.

LaDoucer says the Auto Club is asking state lawmakers to pass legislation requiring drivers to move over a lane when approaching private vehicles stopped on roadways.
