(Fargo, ND) -- Citizens in North Dakota could soon have a chance to vote on legalizing sports betting in the state.
"A yes or no vote on this resolution does not legalize sports betting. A yes or no vote on this measure says yes we respect the people's, the voter's opinions enough to let them give this an up or down vote," said Fargo State Representative Greg Stemen.
Stemen is pushing the resolution, that if approved by lawmakers, would allow voters to decide in 2024 whether to legalize sports betting. Stemen says if sports betting is legalized, state tax revenue during the first year could be as high as $3.6 million dollars. He also says oversight is necessary for an activity which is already happening in the state.
"The fact that it is happening, let's have it happen with reputable companies, let's have it in a manner that has a certain level of transparency and is able to be regulated and has some you know protections built in for the people who choose to do this," said Stemen.
The state representative appeared on "What's on Your Mind" on AM 1100 The Flag.
