MN Department of Transportation reopens I-94 between Barnesville and Moorhead; National Guard troops activated to assist stranded drivers

(Fargo, ND) -- The  Minnesota Department of Transportation has reopened I-94 between Barnesville and Moorhead, after the stretch of highway was shut down overnight  because of drifting snow and treacherous driving conditions.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has also declared a "peacetime emergency" to activate National Guard troops, who are assisting with removing stranded drivers on roadways in the western part of the state.

Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting is also reporting improving conditions on county roadways.

"Visibility has improved and travel is possible within Clay County.  Please drive cautiously as the road surface is slippery in spots and there are vehicles in the ditch, and on the road.  The County plows are out clearing the roads as well," said Emptiing.

"For those with vehicles that were left in the ditch, we will give you time to remove the vehicle on your own.  If the vehicle is a traffic hazard or causing drifting issues, we will have to remove them, but for now, we are leaving them on the County Roads for you to make your own arrangements.  Please do so as soon as possible," the sheriff added.
