Former North Dakota Governor Ed Schafer: state government growing faster "than anything you can measure it with"

(Fargo, ND) -- A former North Dakota Governor says the state's government is growing too quickly.

"We are growing our government faster than population growth, faster than CPI, the consumer price index, faster than personal income growth, you know faster than about anything you can measure it with," said Ed Schafer.

Schafer says government should be grown within "the bounds of affordability", or according to the ability of citizens to pay for it.  He also says growth in personal income should be the primary factor used to determine how quickly state government grows.

Schaefer also previously served as secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
