State official issues speed warning on Minnesota highways

(Fargo, ND) -- The Director for the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety is reminding drivers the rules of the road include more than just observing the speed limit.

"Under Minnesota law, it requires drivers to not only obey the speed limit but also to drive according to the existing road, weather, and traffic conditions. So as often as not, the safe speed somebody should be traveling is actually below the posted limit," said Mike Hanson.

Mike Hanson is drawing attention to people driving too fast, saying it's the number one contributing factor in accidents that happen in wintry conditions. Hanson appeared on "Bonnie and Friends" on WDAY AM 970.

Hanson also says cable median barriers are playing a key role in improving safety on Minnesota Highways.

"Working with our friends at MNDOT, that has proven to be such a success. In areas where those cable median barriers have been erected they have virtually eliminated cross-median events for the most part."
