Fargo broker reports increased calls about flood insurance following warning from National Weather Service

(Fargo, ND) -- A local insurance agent says the number of people calling in to ask about flood insurance is on the upswing.

"Usually for most people, your home is your most, your biggest asset, so it's a small investment to protect your largest asset," said Dustin Ihry, with Ihry Insurance in Fargo.

Ihry says homeowners are calling after the National Weather Service announced last week that there is a significant chance for spring flooding along the Red River here in the FM metro.

Ihry says the average annual policy runs around $700 to $800 and sometimes more.

He also says a policy does not go into effect until 30 days after its purchased.

Maximum coverage for home policies purchased under the National Flood Insurance Program tops out at $250 thousand. For businesses, the maximum is $500 thousand.
