West Fargo business gets scanner to detect fake ID’s

WEST FARGO – Bernie’s Wines and Liquors on Sheyenne Street in West Fargo has a new tool to detect fake ID’s. The West Fargo Police Department has partnered with Fargo Cass Public Health to distribute a series of forensic ID scanners to combat underage drinking. Bernie’s is the first business to get one of them. The scanner has 98% accuracy. They cost about $5,300 but are funded by a grant through the state and are being loaned to businesses free of charge.

“The fake IDs found in our region are increasing in quality while becoming easier to obtain for underage individuals,” said Pete Nielsen, Chief of Police. “The addition of the scanners are a great tool for our local liquor establishments to consistently identify fraudulent ID cards.”

West Fargo Police hope to get eight of the scanners for businesses in town.
