(West Hollywood, CA) -- West Hollywood is famous for the Sunset Strip but may soon be known as the home of the highest minimum wage in the country.

The city council passed a motion to increase it to 17-dollars-64-cents an hour. The new wage takes effect on the first of the year for hotel workers and on July first for everyone else.

The city of Emeryville currently holds the record for America's highest minimum wage, at 17-dollars-13-cents.

The federal minimum wage has been the same since 2009, and is set at seven-25 an hour.
