(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- NASA is launching a new X-ray telescope to study black holes.

The X-ray satellite will blast off from Kennedy Space Center early Thursday morning aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The mission is a collaboration between NASA and the Italian Space Agency, and will contain three telescopes capable of seeing the "polarization" of cosmic X-rays.

A scientist involved in the launch says the mission could help them understand how black holes and other remnants of exploded stars produce X-rays, and that they'll be "analyzing the results for decades to come."
