(Boulder, CO) -- It appears Pluto is home to ice volcanoes.

The study is based on images of Pluto captured by NASA's New Horizons mission, which did a flyby of the dwarf planet in 2015. A new analysis of the photos shows a bumpy region on Pluto that researchers say is a field of very large volcanoes.

The study published Tuesday shows a volcanic dome about 23-thousand feet high and 140 miles wide. Scientists at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado say the domes are caused by ice volcanoes that push water up from below, and which quickly turns into ice when it hits Pluto's frozen surface.
