(Washington, DC) -- The Department of Labor says initial jobless claims fell last week.

The number of people filing for jobless benefits for the first time dropped to 256-thousand the week ending July 23rd. That's down from 261-thousand the previous week.

It's a smaller decrease than expected, however, with market expectations predicting 253-thousand claims.

The four week moving average jumped more than six-thousand to just over 249-thousand claims.
