(Half Moon Bay, CA) -- California Governor Gavin Newsom is again calling for federal action on gun safety and angrily denouncing Republicans for refusing to adopt common sense gun safety measures.

Newsom spoke to reporters Tuesday in Half Moon Bay, where seven people were killed in a mass shooting on Monday.

The shooting in the rural community about 30 miles south of San Francisco happened just two days after eleven people were killed at a dance hall in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles.

Newsom specifically went after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who represents Bakersfield, for not making a public statement after the shootings. Newsom said, "Where's he been on gun safety reform? Where's the Republican Party been on gun safety reform?

California has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, which Newsom said explains why the state's gun death rate is 37-percent below the national average.
