(Big Pine, CA) -- An 81-year-old man who spent nearly a week stuck in a snowbank in his SUV is back home.

Jerry Jouret left his mountain home in Big Pine, California in the sparsely populated eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains on February 24th.

He was headed for his family home in Gardnerville, Nevada, an hour south of Reno. His grandson told CNN that the retired mathematician and former NASA employee had checked road and weather conditions before leaving. But his SUV slid off the road into a snowbank and a huge storm swept in.

Jouret stayed in the vehicle, conserved the gas and battery, and survived on candy, croissants, and biscotti for six days before a rescue helicopter team spotted him.

He spent a few hours in the hospital being checked over, then the next day he was on a bus, back to his home in Nevada.
